Derek Smith Shootout: Providence eliminated in tournament’s 2nd round

June 20, 2010

Jeffersonville and Providence were Southern Indiana’s only representation at the Derek Smith Shootout, one of the summer’s most prominent tournaments primarily featuring the top Kentucky high school teams.

Here is a run down of Friday and Saturday action from the Hoops facility in Louisville:

  • Providence was eliminated 77-61 by Pleasure Ridge Park (Ky.) in the second round of elimination tournament play. Junior-to-be A.J. Schmidt racked up 33 points in the Pioneers’ loss.
  • Jeffersonville was surprised by Louisville (Ky.) Valley in the opening round of tournament play, 71-60. Sophomore-to-be Darryl Baker led the short-handed Red Devils, which were missing key players Evan Maschmeyer and Tyrone Williams due to prior commitments, with 17 points.
  • Schmidt turned in a 25 point performance in the first round of tournament play for Providence, which advanced with a 59-56 win over Ravenwood (Tenn.).
  • It had been rumored for the last month that Scottsburg’s Max Clemons — recognized as one of Southern Indiana’s top prospects in the Class of 2012 — had transferred across the river to Pleasure Ridge Park. Clemons was on the PRP roster for the entire Derek Smith event, and started for the Panthers in their tournament game we saw versus Providence. He appeared to fit right in with what should be a very successful PRP squad.
  • In pool play, Jeffersonville edged DeSales (Ky.) 63-62, lost to Louisville (Ky.) Central 63-61 and fell to Fern Creek (Ky.) 81-79 in two overtimes.
  • Providence got past Valley 58-49, was beaten 54-53 by Louisville (Ky.) Moore and lost 67-66 to Louisville (Ky.) Seneca in pool play.
