HoosierHillsHoops.com: The clock is unwinding on your senior season at Seymour. What are your goals for the final weeks of your high school basketball career?
Kyle Fellows: The main thing we’re focused on is getting on a roll these last few games to build confidence going into the tournament. We need to figure out the right formula to win, regardless of the final score. We have been close in almost every game, so we need to get over that hump. Once the tournament starts it is a whole new season and we’re looking forward to a chance at ruining someone’s season. A personal goal of mine would be to impress a college coach and have them give me the opportunity to play at the next level.
HHH: Seymour and its Lloyd E. “Barney” Scott Gymnasium is noted as one of Southern Indiana’s nicest and most impressive facilities, and it plays host to a lot of post-season play. What has it been like to practice and play in that facility day-in and day-out?
Fellows: It is a great privilege to play in our gym everyday. Sometimes it is a real shock going into different gyms and seeing how small they are; that is when we really understand how lucky we are to play in our gymnasium. Also, in post-season play we have hosted and continue to host a lot of great teams and players so that is really neat.
HHH: Although Seymour hasn’t had what some would consider “banner years” in recent times, what have been some of the highlights of your basketball career?
Fellows: Our fourth quarter comeback against Columbus East this year was probably my favorite moment of all so far. Matt Lucas had an incredible fourth quarter, scoring 26 points in the quarter and hitting the game winner as time expired. I watched that film for days after the game. Watching Matt Trimnell go off at Floyd Central last year was great to be part of, too. My sophomore year at Jennings County was also great. We went into two overtimes and hit two game-winners but one was called off. I think the overall experience of playing high school basketball in Southern Indiana has been a highlight itself. We play in a great sectional, where it seems like a team is favored to make a deep run in the tournament every year.
HHH: Looking beyond basketball, what subject would you like to focus on in college? Where do you plan to attend college?
Fellows: At the moment, I’m leaning towards sports management (as a major). Whatever I do, I know I want to be around sports because that is my passion. My options are open for college right now.
HHH: You mentioned that coaching is something you find interesting. Can you see yourself coaching as a professional? If so, at what level would you ideally like to coach?
Fellows: I have thought about being a coach. I think it would be fun and I’d get the chance to be around basketball. If I decide to pursue a coaching career, there would be no better place to do it than high school basketball in South Indiana, right?
