FRIDAY’S GIRLS’ GAMES | Lanesville goes to Scottsburg for postseason warmup

January 28, 2022

By GREG MENGELT

Lanesville has a chance to get to 22 wins and 18 straight victories with a win in Friday’s Hoosier Hills Hoops Game of the Night.

But it won’t be easy. The Class A No. 2 Eagles (21-1) close their regular season at one of the area’s toughest gyms when they go to Charles E. Meyer Gymnasium to take on Scottsburg (10-10).

“Scottsburg has a very rich and successful tradition for winning,” Lanesville coach Angie Hinton said. “Two years ago we traveled up there to play against the legendary coach Donna Cheatham but unfortunately, she was unable to be there due to an injury. It is a valuable experience for our kids to play in venues that have so much tradition.”

Lanesville is 11-1 against teams from larger classes this season. Its lone loss came against Corydon Central inn November. Since then, the Eagles have beaten big programs like New Albany, Floyd Central, Eastern and Salem.

Lanesville is expected to complete for sectional, regional, semistate and perhaps a state championship beginning next week at the sectional at New Washington. The Eagles open the postseason next Tuesday against Rock Creek with Borden awaiting the winner for Friday night’s semifinals.

“This type of game and atmosphere, especially late in the season, will hopefully prepare us better for the upcoming IHSAA tournament,” Hinton said.

Scottsburg is 10-10 against one of the area’s toughest schedules. The Warriorettes have a regular-season game left on their schedule. They host Madison (11-7) on Saturday afternoon before opening the sectional Tuesday against defending Class 3A state champion Silver Creek (20-2).

“We have been very inconsistent this year and will need to play a solid, focused game,” said second-year Scottsburg coach Carrie Daniels, the former head coach at Austin Peay University. “We are going to have to handle pressure and make good decisions from baseline to baseline. With two regular-season games remaining, we need to find some momentum heading in to sectional play.”
