Indiana Junior All-Stars sweep Kentucky in Indianapolis

June 16, 2012

INDIANAPOLIS — Warren Central’s Devin Davis scored 24 points and Hamilton Southeastern’s Zak Irvin contributed 22 on Friday night, leading the Indiana Junior All-Stars to a 126-103 victory over Kentucky at Heritage Christian School.

Tony Wills, of Indianapolis Ben Davis, chipped in 16 points as the Indiana teams claimed both ends of the boy-girl doubleheader on the opening night of the home-and-home event — the first junior series between the states in the tradition of a senior series that dates to 1940.

The Indiana girls won the night’s first game 101-98.

V.J. Beachem (New Haven) tallied 13 points, Clay Yeo (Triton) added 12 points and Leo Svete (Penn) had 10 points as Indiana placed six players in double figures in the boys’ victory. Omar Prewitt (Montgomery County) scored 18 points and Darryl Hicks of (Louisville Trinity) had 16 to pace Kentucky.

The Hoosier boys also converted 13 3-pointers and made 19-of-22 free throws in the comfortable decision.

Kentucky took an early lead, but Indiana rebounded to seize a 63-57 advantage at intermission of the game with two 20-minute halves.

In the girls’ game, Taya Reimer (Hamilton Southeastern) scored 28 points and Stephanie Mavunga (Brownsburg) tossed in 23 as Indiana overcame a 44-point outburst by Kentucky’s Becca Greenwell of Owensboro Catholic to prevail.

Kentucky led 40-31 late in the first half, but Indiana used a 17-2 surge late in the period to take a 48-42 edge at the break. Indiana used another flurry early in the second half to push its lead to double figures, but Kentucky rallied down the stretch to close within a single possession before the Hoosiers sealed the win.

Celeste Edwards (Indianapolis North Central) added 15 points, Bridget Perry (Indianapolis Roncalli) tossed in 11 and Jenn Anderson (Westfield) had nine to help the Indiana cause.

Larryn Brooks (Madison Central) contributed 22 points and Kyvin Goodin-Rogers (Marion County) had 11 for Kentucky.

Their efforts were in support of Greenwell, who dropped in 13 field goals — including six 3-pointers — and 12-of-14 free throws en route to her huge performance.

The rematches will be Saturday at North Oldham High School in Goshen, Ky. The girls’ game will begin at 5:30 p.m., and the boys game will follow.
