WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. — IU Southeast scored the first seven points, led by as many as 14 in the first half and held a 35-27 halftime lead Thursday at the Cumberlands, but the host Patriots outscored the Grenadiers 54-31 in the second half of their 81-66 triumph in the opening round of the Cumberlands Classic.
IU Southeast (1-4) went cold in the second half and shot just 36.4 percent for the game (24-of-66). The Grenadiers made just 10 of their 36 field goal attempts (27.8 percent) after halftime. The 15th-ranked Patriots, who are 5-0 for the second straight year and the ninth time in the past 20 years, shot 20-for-26 from the field in the second half.
Anthony Wales Jr. led IU Southeast with 14 points and Jared Osborne finished with 13. Wales also had a team-best four assists.
IU Southeast faces Campbellsville (Ky.) on Friday at 2 p.m. back at the O. Wayne Rollins Center. Campbellsville defeated Union College (Ky.) 88-86 in its first-round matchup Thursday.
