TULSA, Okla. — An extraordinarily balanced Air Force team pulled off a 59-58 upset at Tulsa on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Jake Heidbreder — a Floyd Central graduate — was one of nine Falcons between five and nine points in the win. Heidbreder went 2-for-7 for five points and added two rebounds, an assist and a blocked shot to the victory.
Air Force trailed 58-56 until junior reserve guard Camden Vander Zwaag knocked down a 3-pointer with 23 seconds left. Tulsa, which opened its season with a win over Northwestern State, got a shot at the buzzer, but Sam Griffin’s jumper missed.
Heidbreder’s first basket came was a 3-pointer with 3:09 left in the first half and gave Air Force a 28-23 lead. With the Falcons trailing 46-35, Heidbreder scored on a layup on an assist from Vander Zwaag to start a 22-12 game-winning run.
For Air Force (1-1), Vander Zwaag, A.J. Walker, Nick Jackson and each scored nine points, Ethan Taylor and Joseph Octave scored seven a piece and Heidbreder and Lucas Moerman both scored five in the victory. Moerman, Taylor and Heidbreder are all freshmen.
Griffin had a game-high 21 points for the Golden Hurricane.
The Falcons host Texas Southern on Thursday in their 2021-22 home debut.
