OXFORD, Ohio — Bellarmine dominated the second half and upset Miami (Ohio) 77-68 Saturday at Millett Hall.
Four Knights starters scored in double figures and all five scored at least 7 points as they improved to 6-7 on the season with their fourth win in their last five games.
Junior guard Alec Pfriem led the way with 22 points, while senior guard CJ Fleming had 18, senior guard Dylan Penn (Evansville/Memorial) finished with 16, freshman forward Curt Hopf (Montgomery/Barr-Reeve) had 10 and former Providence star Juston Betz contributed 7 points.
Betz, a senior wing, was 3 for 6 from the floor, including his fifth 3-pointer made of the season, to go along with 7 rebounds, 4 steals and a couple of assists.
The Knights trailed 34-32 at halftime but outscored the RedHawks 45-34 in the final 20 minutes. Miami took a 38-32 lead early the second half, but a Betz bucket pulled Bellarmine within a point and a Hopf layup put the Knights ahead 42-41 with 15:03 left. The Knights never trailed again.
A Pfriem putback broke a 50-50 tie and started a 27-18 run that broke the game open for Bellarmine.
Miami junior guard Dae Dae Grant — the team’s leading scorer at 15.4 points per game heading into the contest — tied Pfriem with game-high honors with 22 points. Former Bosse star Mekhi Lairy, a senior guard, had an off day with 9 points and 4 assists.
The Knights host Loyola Marymount (6-4) at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Freedom Hall. The Lions, out of the West Coast Conference, have won four of their last six games.
