Ali Patberg is ringing in the new year with more than a resolution.
The Columbus North sophomore is celebrating the start of 2013 with a commitment.
Patberg, a 5-foot-10 guard who is averaging 18.3 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists for the 14-0 Bull Dogs, announced Monday evening that she has made an oral commitment to accept a scholarship to the University of Notre Dame.
“Notre Dame is the place with all the right components for me,” said Patberg, who helped Columbus North to a 23-4 record and Class 4-A state runner-up finish last season as a freshman. “It is a school with an outstanding academic reputation, a fabulous basketball program and coaches and players whom I have grown to like immensely during the recruiting process.
“It also is an Indiana school and not too far from home, two other factors that are important to me.”
Patberg informed Irish coach Muffet McGraw by telephone of her decision on Monday afternoon, then spent the latter part of the day calling coaches from other colleges to inform them of her decision.
Other programs that had offered Patberg a scholarship were Butler, Dayton, Illinois, Indiana, Louisville, Marquette and Purdue. Other schools that had inquired about her included Connecticut, Duke, Maryland, Stanford, Vanderbilt, several other Big Ten schools and numerous other NCAA Division I programs.

The Bull Dog’s trio of Ali Patberg, Kelsey Cunningham and Tayler Goodall each reached double figures as Columbus North overtook Fort Wayne South in the second half and captured the inaugural Subway/Columbus North Invitational championship 57-35.
Patberg led Columbus North with 19 points, Cunningham added 15 and Goodall 11.
“We wanted to win because it’s our home court,” Patberg said. “We wanted to show everyone how hard we’ve been working and that we play as a team. Hopefully we’ll play this way the rest of the season.”
Fort Wayne South, which was outscored 35-13 in the second half, got 11 points from Brittni Clopton.
In the third-place game, a Roncalli’s balanced attack methodically defeated Norwell 63-45.
Kellie Kirkhoff finished with 18 points, Elizabeth Bowers contributed 15 and Lindsey Corsaro 12 as Roncalli outscored Norwell 35-22 in the second half.
Norwell was paced by Taylor Wilson‘s 18 points, and Kelsey Beer chipped in 10.

Kindell Fincher poured in a game-high 27 points as Fort Wayne Canterbury downed Notre Dame Academy (Ky.) 73-55 to take fifth-place at the Subway/Columbus North Invitational.
Darby Maggard added 19 points, Bailey Farley had 15 and Aaliyah Gaines 12 for Canterbury.
Notre Dame Academy was led by Haylee Smith‘s 17 points.
In the seventh-place contest, Paige Avery totaled 13 points and Taylor Parmley chipped in 12 as Mishawaka put away Avon 57-40.
Avon was led by Brooke Peters and Taylor Speckman; both players finished with 10 points.

Columbus North rallied in the second half to knock off Roncalli 40-37 and Fort Wayne South cruised past Norwell 65-48 in the semifinals of the Subway/Columbus North Invitational, setting up a showdown tonight at 7 between the host Bull Dogs, ranked No. 2 in Class 4-A, and the No. 3 Archers for the tournament’s inaugural championship.
Tayler Goodall connected on four of her six 3-pointers in the second half to lead Columbus North, and Kelsey Cunningham added four 3-pointers for 12 points. Roncalli was led by freshman Lindsey Corsaro‘s 13 points, and Bridget Perry finished with 11.
Lakyn Gulley knocked down five 3-pointers and collected 17 points and Brittni Clopton and Lynnia Noel each added 12 as Fort Wayne South cruised to a semifinal victory. Norwell got 11 points from Paige Frisch and 10 from Laken Chaney.
Roncalli and Norwell will hook up tonight at 5:15 to determine third and fourth places.

Notre Dame Academy (Ky.) upended Mishawaka 76-60 and Fort Wayne Canterbury whipped Avon 80-59 to advance in Saturday morning’s fifth-place bracket semifinals at the Subway/Columbus North Invitational.
Olivia Voskuhl netted 23 points and Haylee Smith chipped in 18 for Notre Dame. Mishawaka was led by Taylor Parmley‘s 17 points.
Fort Wayne Canterbury had three players with 20-plus points in their commanding victory: Kindell Fincher tallied 27 points, Darby Maggard hit five 3-pointers and had 25 and Bailey Farley 23. Avon was led by Brooke Peters‘ 10 points.
Canterbury and Notre Dame will meet for fifth-place and Avon and Mishawaka will compete for seventh-place. Both games will be at 3:30.
