Hoosier Basketball Magazine tabs top-60 senior girls

Hoosier Basketball Magazine published its list of the top-60 senior girls’ basketball players for the magazine’s Top 60 Workout, set for Sunday, March 11, at Marian University in Indianapolis.

Twenty-eight girls, primarily from the northern and southern portions of Indiana, will participate in the first session from 1 to 3p.m.. The remaining 32 girls, mostly from central Indiana, will compete during the second sessions from 3:30 to 5:30p.m.

Rick Risinger, a four-time state champion coach from Heritage Christian, will direct both sessions. Four additional girls’ high school coaches will also join the workout’s staff: Curt Benge (Plainfield), Amy Brauman (Brownsburg), Kristi Kaniewski (Penn) and Mike McBride (Eastern Pekin).

TORNADO RELIEF: A Night of Hoops and Hope for Southern Indiana, presented by Your Community Bank

To help the victims of the recent tornado disaster in Clark and Washington counties, a basketball-oriented fundraiser — A Night of Hoops and Hope for Southern Indiana — is being planned with complete details expected to be announced this weekend.

Borden coach Doc Nash, whose team will play in the Class 1-A Loogootee Regional Saturday, said he was flattered when asked to take part in the event. “As coaches, we feel obligated to take part and do whatever we can do to help,” Nash said. “More importantly, it’s the right thing to do.”

Brittany Schoen new all-time 3-point leader at Indiana State

Brittany SchoenBrittany Schoen, a Class of 2008 graduate at South Central, became Indiana State’s all-time leader in career 3-point baskets made on Sunday, netting her 264th 3-pointer in a 63-48 loss at Creighton.

Schoen, a senior, scored her record-setting trey with 2:07 remaining in the game. The Southern Indiana product, who is averaging 11 points per game, passed Kelsey Luna in the Sycamores’ record books, and currently sits fifth all-time in 3-pointers converted in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Pairings set for 102nd annual boys’ state tournament

Four hundred and one teams were drawn today and placed into brackets for the 102nd annual IHSAA Boys’ Basketball State Tournament.

Sectional games are scheduled to begin Monday, Feb. 27, and run through Saturday, March 3, with the regional round slated for March 10 and semi-states on March 17. The four state championship games that make up the state finals will be played at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Saturday, March 24. Sectional schedules will be announced by the host schools this week.

Hamilton Southeastern, the top-ranked team in the Class 4-A poll from the Associated Press as well as the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association will meet No. 3 Indianapolis North Central right off the bat in the opening game of Sectional 8 at Noblesville.

In Class 3-A, No. 1 Greensburg will host Franklin County in Sectional 29.

Class 2-A No. 1 Park Tudor, the defending state champion, takes on Indianapolis Marshall in Sectional 42 at Indianapolis Broad Ripple.

Barr-Reeve, the top team in Class A, faces Washington Catholic in the opening game of Sectional 63 at North Daviess.

Among the other defending state champions, Washington, winner of the last two 3-A crowns, will host Jasper in the first game of Sectional 31.

Indianapolis Metropolitan has moved up to Class 2-A after winning the 1A title a year ago. The Pumas drew a first round bye and will meet the Indianapolis Washington-Triton Central winner in the Sectional 43 semifinals at Triton Central.

And in 4-A, home-standing Bloomington South also drew a bye and will await the Shelbyville-Columbus East winner in Sectional 14.

Only one school is new to the boys state tournament this year as 21st Century Charter, located in Gary, will make its debut against Washington Township in Class A Sectional 49 at Morgan Township.

Lafayette Central Catholic (Class A) leads the state with 10 consecutive sectional championships while Washington follows with seven straight.
