AAU Super Showcase: Team Southern Indiana winless after day one

AAU Super ShowcaseTeam Southern Indiana’s 2014 and 2015 Red teams began play Wednesday at the AAU Super Showcase in Orlando, Fla. Here are highlights from day one:

2014 Red

2014 Red trimmed an 11-point deficit to one point in the final period but couldn’t get over the hump, losing 70-64 to the R.A.P. Memorial Squad (N.Y.) in their first game of pool play. Columbus East’s Bryce Lienhoop tossed in 22 points, Brownstown’s Chaz Schneider added 13 and New Albany’s Dre McBirth 11 in the loss.

In their second pool contest, 2014 Red fell 56-51 to Team Richmond (Va.). Lienhoop again paced TSI, scoring 21 points, and Brownstown’s Chase Klinge and Clarksville’s Calvin McEwen each added seven.

2015 Red

Ferrari, of Chicago, Ill., defeated 2015 Red 44-28 in the team’s first game of pool action. Floyd Central’s Jackson Logsdon led TSI in defeat with seven points.

The Southern King (Ga.) edged 2015 Red in their second game, 62-55. Floyd Central’s Lucas Miller and Rock Creek’s Blake Joseph scored 10 a piece for TSI.

Team Southern Indiana’s 2013 girls win Blue Chip Early Exposure Showcase

Team Southern Indiana’s 2013 girls team edged Indiana Blast Heat 46-39 Sunday afternoon to win the 10th-grade division at the Blue Chip Early Exposure Showcase in Louisville.

Corydon’s Kayla Uhl, Brownstown’s Kaylee Bennett and North Harrison’s Kendra Lambert each totaled eight points in the championship game. Floyd Central’s Niki Bruno and Brownstown’s Kaley Wilkerson added seven a piece for TSI.

Uhl netted four consecutive free throws in the final two-minutes of the game to secure the victory, coach Will Eubank said.

The team went 5-0 on the weekend, winning all three pool play games and beating Pontiac (Mich.) Bears in the semifinals and Indiana Blast for the championship.

Other 2013 team members in attendance this weekend were Bedford North Lawrence’s Lauren Boshears, Corydon’s Savannah Eschbacher and Paoli’s Sophie Sears. Lambert and New Washington’s Ashley Johnson, both of TSI’s 2014 team, played up this weekend.

Team Southern Indiana 2015 Red finishes second at Best of the Midwest

Team Southern Indiana 2015 Red garnered a second-place finish Friday afternoon in the 14 and-under gold-bracket at Best of the Midwest in Indianapolis.

TSI lost 62-59 to a Spiece team in the title contest.

Scottsburg’s Christian Evans led the team in defeat with 17 points. Will Brown, of Rock Creek, and Silver Creek’s Gabe Bauer finished with 14 and 13, respectively.

TSI’s 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 Red teams will close out the summer next week at the AAU Super Showcase in Orlando, Fla.

Team Southern Indiana 2012 Red wins copper-bracket at Kentucky HoopFest

Kentucky HoopFestTeam Southern Indiana 2012 Red knocked off Pensacola (Fla.) Elite 60-48 to win the 17 and-under copper-bracket — or fourth-place bracket — Monday afternoon at the Kentucky HoopFest in Louisville.

Silver Creek’s Caleb Sprigler netted 16 points and Switzerland County’s Keegan Kincaid added 15 in the championship game for TSI.

Other team members include: Darryl Baker, Jeffersonville; Jonathan Ellis, Jeffersonville; Sam Hunt, Jennings County; Keontez Malone, Rock Creek; Grant Meyer, Silver Creek; Jason Ray, Martinsville and Bailey Sanders, Jennings County.

TSI’s 2015 Red squad lost to CIA Bounce (Canada) in the finals of the 14 and-under silver-bracket. Team members include: Gabe Bauer, Silver Creek; Will Brown, Rock Creek; Christian Evans, Scottsburg; Blake Joseph, Rock Creek; Jackson Logsdon, Floyd Central; Lucas Miller, Floyd Central; Jacob Schafer, Borden; Cameron Schmidt, Rock Creek and Jake Steele, Silver Creek.

Jasper’s Caleb Begley touted as most-improved player at High Potential/Blue-Chip Camp

Jasper senior-to-be Caleb Begley was named most-improved player last week at the summer’s first-session of Rick Bolus’ 32nd-annual High Potential/Blue-Chip Camp in Georgetown, Ky.

Begley, who also is a baseball star at Jasper and doesn’t play travel team hoops, told Hoosier Hills Hoops he would prefer to play basketball at the collegiate level.

Brothers Damon and Devon Wahl, seniors-to-be from Heritage Hills, were both named to the camp’s Second 20 All-Star Game, in which Devon totaled five points to help lift his White team to a 59-49 victory over the Gold stars.

Other Southern Indiana high school players who attended the session included: Perry Central sophomore-to-be Alton Cummings; Perry Central sophomore-to-be Austin LeClere; Perry Central sophomore-to-be Austin Linne; Heritage Hills sophomore-to-be Devon Merder; Perry Central freshman-to-be Aaron Pierrard and Jac-Cen-Del freshman-to-be Alex Pilz.

The camp’s second-session will be held July 17-21 at Georgetown College.

Providence wins tournament at DePauw University

Providence netted three wins Sunday to capture the tournament championship at DePauw University’s team camp in Greencastle, Pioneer coach Lou Lefevre told Hoosier Hills Hoops.

Providence knocked off Southridge in the quarterfinals, bested local rival Silver Creek in the semifinal round and got past Barr-Reeve in the championship contest.
