New Albany senior-to-be Chris Whitehead has had no time for a summer vacation. The two-sport star has been on the move since the end of high school basketball in March, playing in various basketball and football tournaments, camps and workouts across the area.
“(July) was a crazy month just like the rest of my summer,” Whitehead said. “This was really my first full month playing in front of college coaches, so it’s been great to get some interest.”
Following the first 10-day evaluation period for NCAA Division I coaches, Scouting Indiana wrote that Whitehead, who helped lead Team Southern Indiana 2011 Red to the Hoosier Shootout gold-bracket championship, was one of the “top-five Indiana prospects who raised their stock” to begin the live period.
“Everything changes in July,” he said. “I knew our team was good but to win the Hoosier Shootout in front of that many coaches was something we are so proud of. It was a great experience, a wonderful summer.”
Whitehead “hasn’t made up his mind as to what I’ll play in college,” but said that he is going to “step back and take a look at his basketball opportunities” in the fall months.
“I just want to make sure I find a good situation either through basketball or football to get a degree. That degree is what it’s all about to me. I’m going to consider all my options in both sports and then make a decision.”
NCAA Division I schools that have contacted Whitehead regarding basketball include: Austin Peay, Ball State, Eastern Kentucky, Eastern Illinois, Evansville, Louisiana Tech, Miami (Ohio), Northeastern, Ohio, Radford, Tennessee-Martin, Toledo, Western Illinois and Wright State. Bellarmine, along with a host of Division II schools, also have expressed interest in the budding star.
