TSI Spring League: Bulldogs win league tournament

Team Southern Indiana Boys' High School Spring LeagueAfter winning regular league play last weekend with a 7-1 record, the Bulldogs slipped past the Irish 73-65 to win the league tournament Sunday at Nolan Fieldhouse.

Providence senior Ryan Dixon was named league MVP after the championship game but did not play because he was scheduled to pitch in Monday’s baseball sectional.

The Floyd Central senior duo of Wade Nieoff and Nick Veroff scored 23 and 17 points, respectively, to boost the Bulldogs to the tournament championship.

Jennings County’s Dustin Lawson totaled 23 points and New Albany’s Landon Howard added 13 to lead the Irish in defeat.

Semifinals

Bulldogs 67, Boilermakers 65: Providence’s Cory Calahan netted 23 points and Veroff 13 as the Bulldogs held off the Irish. Louisville St. Xavier’s Nathan Smith scored 19 points, Eastern Pekin’s Philip Boudreaux added 16 and New Albany’s Trevor Brown 13 for the Boilermakers.

Irish 92, Aces 47: Lawson poured in 34 points and Kameron Draper (Austin) and Blake Lieras (Jeffersonville) each added 19 as the Irish pounded the short-handed Aces. Clarksville’s Wes Rittman finished with 11 points for the Aces.

First round

Aces 55, Cardinals 40:Rittman netted 13 points as the Aces cruised to the semifinals. The Hoosiers were led by Silver Creek’s Ryan Kinzer; he finished with 16 points.

Irish 65, Hoosiers 60: Lawson scored 24 points, Lieras added 16 and Austin’s Dylan McIntosh 14 as the Irish advanced. The Hoosiers were led by Charlestown’s Tim Hall (12).

Bulldogs 58, Sycamores 40: Veroff finished with 25 and Nieoff chipped in 22, and the Bulldogs walloped the Sycamores. South Ripley’s Brandon Sizemore led the Sycamores with 18.

Boilermakers 71, Crusaders 66: Boudreaux (22), West Washington’s Clayton Sullivan (20) and Brown (16) finished with double figures as the Boilermakers held off the Crusaders. Charlestown’s Joe Wilson exploded for 32 points in the Crusaders’ loss.

Team Southern Indiana scores two titles at Memorial Day Hoopfest

V.J. BillupsTwo Team Southern Indiana teams grabbed tournament championships and three others advanced to the semifinals this weekend at the Blue Chip Memorial Day Hoopfest, the final tournament of the spring AAU circuit.

TSI 2011 Red edged Royal Family 64-60 Sunday night to win the 17 and under title, the team’s third championship of the spring. Jeffersonville’s V.J. Billups led the team with 17 points. Aaron Cosby, who joined the team last week after returning to Louisville from a Massachusetts prep school, added 16, and New Albany’s Chris Whitehead 12.

2011 Red routed the Southern Indiana Stars 69-45 in the semifinal round. Cosby poured in 22 points and New Albany’s Adam Stotts added 13 to help the team advance.

TSI 2012 Red put together quite a run Monday to win the 16 and under championship, beating two of Kentucky’s better teams — The Ville (quarterfinals) and Next Level Sports (semifinals) — before upending Evansville-based MBC Stars 55-51 in the title game. Jeffersonville freshman Darryl Baker totaled 18 points, Switzerland County’s Keegan Kincaid added 13, Jonathan Ellis (Jeffersonville) 11 and Jordan Ellis (Jeffersonville) 10.

2012 Red advanced to the championship with a 58-56 win over Next Level, the reigning Kentucky AAU champion. The team was led by Kincaid and Jordan Ellis; each scored 15.

TSI 2013 Red, 2014 Red and 2015 Red advanced to the quarterfinal round of their respective bracket before elimination.

Other Monday highlights:

  • TSI 2014 Red was eliminated by Quin Chapel 55-51 in the 15 and under division semifinals. Borden’s Garrett Vick paced the team with eight points.
  • Rock Creek’s Will Brown scored 11 points but TSI 2015 Red faltered in the waning moments, losing 44-41 to the River City Celtics in the 13 and under semifinals.
  • 2015 Red advanced to the semis with a 62-25 stomping of the Running Cavaliers. Corydon’s Michael Wiseman totaled 12 and Brown added 11 for TSI.
  • TSI 2013 Red was rocked in the 15 and under semifinals 72-40 by Royal Family.
  • TSI 2012 Red got 20 points from Baker, 16 from Jordan Ellis and 12 from Jonathan Ellis, and the team nixed The Ville 2012, 70-67, in the quarterfinals of the 16 and under division.
  • TSI 2013 Red ambushed Team Jags 78-57 in a 15 and under division quarterfinal. Columbus East’s Kyle Taylor and Louisville Ballard’s Lavonne Holland each netted 19 points.
  • TSI 2014 Yellow was eliminated in the 14 and under quarterfinals 48-39 by Southern Illinois Tigers. Henryville’s Devin Richey scored 15 in the loss.

Blue Chip tournament: Day 2 notes

Here is a collection of highlights and other tidbits from Sunday at the Blue Chip Memorial Day Hoopfest at the University of Louisville:

  • TSI 2014 Red crushed the Hoop Dreams 72-22 in pool play. Silver Creek’s Brooks Howell tossed in 24 points, and Borden’s Josh Vollstedt chipped in 11.
  • TSI 2012 White lost 68-64 to Louisville Prospects in pool play. Silver Creek’s Zach Ricketts totaled 15 points and Rock Creek’s De’Jon Garner added 14.
  • A team effort led TSI 2012 Red to a commanding win over the Louisville-based Derek Smith All-Stars, 59-38.
  • TSI 2013 Red got past Southwest Illinois Jets Orange 71-58. Louisville St. Xavier’s Brock Kiesler led the team with 16 points.
  • Team DWC edged TSI 2013 White 74-68 in pool play. New Albany’s Jalen McCoy totaled 13 points and Brownstown’s Skyler Thompson.
  • Switzerland County’s Braden Burk netted 16 points, and TSI 2014 Yellow squeaked past the Louisville Colts 47-42 in pool play.
  • The Nashville Stars Select beat TSI 2011 White 62-51 in their final game of pool play.
  • The T and A Sharks lost at the buzzer 48-47 to TSI 2014 White. Corydon’s Tommy Wiseman netted 17 in the loss.
  • TSI 2011 Red shellacked Courts Elite 81-45 to close out pool play. New Albany’s Chris Whitehead (15) and Morgan Tolliver (14) led TSI; Jeffersonville’s V.J. Billups chipped in 11.
  • TSI 2012 Red and 2012 White met last week at Hoops’ Crossover Classic, a game that ended in overtime with a last-second three-point shot that lifted 2012 Red to the win. The teams met again at Blue Chip in the first round of tournament play, with 2012 Red winning the second meeting, 68-59.
  • TSI 2014 White got past the Louisville Colts 47-35 in the first round of 15 and under tournament play.
  • TSI 2013 Red cruised past the Louisville Legends 87-67 in their tournament opener. Columbus East’s Ridge Harris racked up 28 points, Louisville Ballard’s Lavonne Holland added 19,Kiesler 17 and South Decatur’s Byron Balser 15.
  • Courts Elite slipped past TSI 2011 White in first round of 17 and under tournament play. Crawford County’s Alex Baker scored 16 points and Charlestown’s Anthony Lloyd chipped in 14.

Ten Team Southern Indiana teams are competing this weekend at the University of Louisville in the Blue Chip Memorial Day Hoopfest. Here are pool play results and highlights from day one:

  • The Ville 2015 lambasted TSI 2015 Red 52-34. Rock Creek’s Cameron Schmidt scored 10 points in the loss.
  • TSI 2014 Red edged Quin Chapel 47-41 behind 11 points from Salem’s Tanner Wrobleski and Lanesville’s Jack Ferree.
  • TSI 2014 White crushed the Louisville Colts 48-26. Jennings County’s Brad Hunt led the team with 14 points.
  • Midwest Dynasty rallied to beat TSI 2013 White 62-56. Christian Academy’s Cody Bachman totaled 15 points to lead TSI.
  • TSI 2011 Red made a late push in the second half to upend Royal Family, 65-58. New Albany’s Chris Whitehead scored 18 points, Fairdale’s Josh Stroud chipped in 13 and Bedford North Lawrence’s Braden Knight 12.
  • Team Jags beat TSI 2013 White 74-63. South Central’s Kyle Pease netted 19 points, and Brownstown’s Skylar Thompson added 12 in the loss.

TSI Spring League: Dixon’s buzzer beater keeps Bulldogs perfect; Jennings County’s Lawson gets 43

Team Southern Indiana Boys' High School Spring LeagueProvidence junior Ryan Dixon went coast-to-coast and scored as time expired on a lay in to lift the Bulldogs over the Hoosiers in week three of the Team Southern Indiana Boys’ High School Spring League at Nolan Fieldhouse. The Bulldogs continue to sit a top the league’s standings with a 6-0 record.

Bulldogs 62, Hoosiers 60: Dixon totaled 25 points and Madison’s Seth Pennington added 13 as the Bulldogs remain undefeated. The Hoosiers were led by the Charlestown duo of Kendall Thompson (28) and Tim Hall (17).

Crusaders 90, Aces 86: Northeast Dubois’ Bryce Huebner poured in 29 points and Silver Creek’s Caleb Sprigler added 21 as the Crusaders surprised the Aces. Billy Edelen (Clarksville) and Taylor Banks (Salem) paced the Aces with 29 and 21.

Boilermakers 56, Hoosiers 46: Louis Donastorg (New Albany) scored 12 points to led a balanced attack for the Boilermakers. The Hoosiers were led in the loss by Thompson’s 16 and Hall’s 14.

Aces 65, Sycamores 61: Edelen tossed in 15 points and Banks 14 as the Aces held off the Sycamores. South Ripley’s Brandon Sizremore scored 16, Silver Creek’s Kole Kemmer netted 14 and Orleans’ Bryan Moldrem 13 in the defeat.

Irish 64, Crusaders 61: Jennings County’s Dustin Lawson totaled 21 points and Jeffersonville’s Blake Lieras added 15, and the Irish got pas the Crusaders. Springer and Huebner again led the Crusaders, scoring 22 and 16 points, respectively.

Bulldogs 54, Cardinals 39: Floyd Central’s Nick Verhoff scored 17 points as the Bulldogs routed the Cardinals. South Central’s Nicholas Soots led the Cardinals with nine.

Irish 74, Sycamores 47: Lawson went off for a new league-record 43 points, and the Irish, now in second place, shellacked the Sycamores. Orleans’ Andrew Johnson led the Sycamores with 20.

Cardinals 65, Boilermakers 56: Andrew Hoke (Silver Creek) netted 19 points and Keaton Garner (Rock Creek) added 17, and the Cardinals rolled. West Washington’s Clayton Sullivan paced the Cardinals with 16.

Sunday AMC notes: TSI 2011 Red pulls off major upset; falls in gold-bracket semis

Braden KnightTeam Southern Indiana 2011 Red was the talk of the tournament for much of Sunday after knocking off Indiana Elite Team Indiana — considered one of the nation’s most talented travel teams — in the 17 and under gold-bracket semifinals.

Four players finished in double figures — New Albany’s Chris Whitehead (15), Bedford North Lawrence’s Braden Knight (12), Fairdale (Ky.)’s Josh Stroud (12) and New Albany’s Morgan Tolliver (11) — to lead TSI 2011 Red over Indiana Elite.

In the gold-bracket semifinal, 2011 Red fell 70-67 to Eric Gordon Fastbreak. New Albany’s Adam Stotts led the team in defeat with 24 points, Knight added 15 and Whitehead 10.

Other Sunday results and notes from the AMC:

  • TSI 2011 Red advanced to the gold-bracket quarterfinals with a 54-53 win over Grand Rapids Storm. Jeffersonville’s V.J. Billups led with 15 points and Crawford County’s Parker Hudson added 10.
  • Indiana Elite Team Indiana just barely advanced to the gold-bracket quarterfinals, beating Shining Star Sports Davis, the team that features Jeffersonville’s Evan Maschmeyer, 61-58.
  • TSI 2012 Red fell 61-54 to Dorrian’s Pride in the second-round of the 16 and under gold-bracket. The Jeffersonville trio of Darryl Baker (18), Jordan Ellis (12) and Jonathan Ellis (12) led TSI in defeat.
  • TSI 2014 White beat Dayton C-Hawks 66-53 to advance to the 14U silver bracket semis. Corydon’s Tommy Wiseman led the way with 17 points.
  • The Dayton Nets put out TSI 2014 White in the 14U silver-bracket semifinals. Corydon’s Brayden Lander led the team with 15 points; Jennings County big man Brad Hunt totaled 17 rebounds.
  • TSI 2013 Red rallied in the final minute to upend the Columbus Aces, 58-56. Louisville (Ky.) Ballard’s Lavonne Holland paced the team with 22.
  • TSI 2013 Red fell in overtime 84-81 to the Columbus Predators in a 15U silver-bracket quarterfinal. Holland again led 2013 Red with 34 points, and Columbus East’s Kyle Taylor chipped in 21.
  • TSI 2014 Red was eliminated from the 14U silver-bracket in a second round contest by the Indiana Elite NWI, 68-66. Madison’s Landon Perry netted 19 points in the loss, and Borden’s Garrett Vick added 13.
