In its final Mid-Southern Conference game of the season, North Harrison clinched at least a share of the conference title with a dominating 61-32 road victory at Charlestown on Saturday.
The Cougars controlled the game from the start, grabbing an early 15-2 advantage. North Harrison (12-3, 7-1 MSC) led 33-8 at halftime then scored the first six points of the third quarter.
“It was a big win for us, because the win clinched at least a share of the Mid-Southern Conference championship,” North Harrison head coach Lou Lefevre said. “While Charlestown is in a rebuilding mode, they have played some strong teams very close, so I did not view this as simply an easy win for us.”
Ethan Oakley scored 12 first-half points in the win over 5-14 Charlestown. Point guard Kaleb Kellems ran the show and had seven assists and led North Harrison with eight rebounds. Logan McIntire had a game-high 20 points.
North Harrison controlled the game right from the start, opening a big first-quarter lead of 15-2 and extended the advantage to 33-8 by halftime. Oakley scored 12 first-half points for the Cougars. NH also scored the first 6 points of the 3rd quarter, which pretty much solidified the win. The victory completed the conference schedule for NH, finishing at 7-1. Over the past two seasons, North Harrison is 16-1 in conference play.
Kellems, a point guard, ran the show for the Cougars, dishing out 7 assists and also leading the team with 8 rebounds. McIntire finished with 20 points to lead all scorers in the game. North Harrison is now 12-3 on the season.
The conference championship is North Harrison’s second straight. The Cougars, who host Crawford County (2-15) on Friday, are 23-3 in conference play over the last three seasons.
Brownstown Central (14-3, 6-1) can join North Harrison as MSC co-champions with a win at Eastern (14-2, 3-2) next Friday.

It’s Championship Tuesday!
Apparently that’s a new thing in Southern Indiana, thanks to last week’s winter storms that pushed the five local sectional championships to Tuesday.
Here’s a brief look at each one of our local sectionals:
CLASS 3A NORTH HARRISON SECTIONAL: SILVER CREEK VS. CORYDON CENTRAL
This is easily the best game of the bunch. Both teams have been dominant this season. In fact, one of Corydon Central’s two losses was to Silver Creek (69-40 in Sellersburg on Nov. 22).
The 21-2 Panthers have won nine games in a row, including a 59-52 win over Salem in Satudray’s semifinal, but fourth-ranked Silver Creek (22-2) is the favorite by virtue of the earlier victory and its postseason experience. The defending Class 3A state champion Dragons have won 10 of their last 11 games but they struggled to beat Madison (52-48) on Saturday.
CLASS 2A CRAWFORD COUNTY SECTIONAL: AUSTIN VS. EASTERN
Eastern (14-11) is the 3-time defending sectional champion and the favorite again this year. However, Austin (10-11) has been playing very well and is a dangerous opponent.
The Eagles haven’t won a sectional since winning the 2010 state championship but coming into Tuesday’s championship having won three straight and nine of their last 12 games after a 1-7 start.
Eastern struggled down the stretch against a tough schedule but has rebounded to win its last three games … by a combined 150-54 score.
Eastern won at Austin 46-22, but that was nearly three full months ago.
CLASS A NEW WASHINGTON SECTIONAL: NEW WASHINGTON VS. LANESVILLE
New Washington is one of the area’s hottest teams. The Mustangs have won three in a row and eight of their last nine. In the lone loss during that stretch, New Wash (14-9) led Jeffersonville at halftime.
But no one expects the Mustangs to win Tuesday. That’s because Lanesville (24-1) is probably the best Class A team in Southern Indiana. The Eagles have won 20 games in a row and beat New Washington 67-22 on Dec. 18.
CLASS A WEST WASHINGTON SECTIONAL: WEST WASHINGTON VS. TRINITY LUTHERAN
Not quite like Lanesville but Trinity Lutheran (15-8), which has won three sectional titles in the last four years, is a pretty big favorite at West Washington (15-7).
The teams have similar records, but the Cougars play teams like Brownstown, Scottsburg, North Harrison, Floyd Central and Jennings County. Trinity is 7-2 against Class A teams with their only losses coming to 19-6 Vincennes Rivet and 24-1 Lanesville.
But the Senators have been playing well and should feel they have a chance to win their second sectional crown in four years.
West Washington and Trinity Lutheran did not meet in the regular season.
CLASS 4A JEFFERSONVILLE SECTIONAL: BEDFORD NORTH LAWRENCE VS. JENNINGS COUNTY
No local teams left in this one. No. 3 Bedford North Lawrence (22-2) and Jennings County (17-6) are left standing at Jeffersonville.
It seems that Jennings’ chances of winning depend on which BNL team shows up. Last Tuesday, the Stars struggled to put away Jeffersonville, but in Monday’s semifinal, they controlled Floyd Central from start to finish.
Jennings, which struggled down the stretch of the season, beat Seymour 46-26 in Monday’s semifinal. The Stars beat the Panthers 50-34 on Nov. 30.

Every year, Scottsburg plays one of the area’s toughest schedules. The Warriors have never had a problem with scheduling Southern Indiana’s “big boys” like New Albany and Jeffersonville.
Almost a quarter of this year’s opponents are 4A teams. So far it’s been a mixed bag for Scottsburg. During their 6-1 start, the Warriors defeated a good Columbus North (14-5), but they’ve since lost New Albany and Seymour, both by 20 points.
Now they have an even bigger task in Tuesday’s Hoosier Hills Hoops Boys’ Game of the Night. Bloomington South (13-5) has been the best program in Indiana south of Indianapolis over the past two decades. J.R. Holmes has 731 career wins, just 716 more than Scottsburg’s Eric Richardson.
Richardson has Scottsburg (9-6) back on the rise, but the 2021-22 squad has struggled of late. His second season has already produced nine wins after winning just six game last season.
However, Warriors have lost five of their last eight games and could use a win. A win over Bloomington South would be a huge statement to Scottsburg’s sectional opponents.
This will be the second time the Panthers and Warriors have played. South won by 11 at Scottsburg last season.
Jeffersonville vs. Trinity and Floyd Central vs. Silver Creek were both supposed to be played Tuesday but were postponed or canceled. However, there are some good games.
Sectional rivals Rock Creek (7-7) and Lanesville (4-14) could meet again in March. Both should be contenders. Salem (4-10) travels to Paoli (8-7) and Christian Academy (6-11) will try to snap a 5-game losing streak when it hosts Henryville (4-11), which has lost four in a row.

Floyd Central moved up three spots to No. 9, entering the top 10 for the first time this season, in the Indiana Basketball Coaches’ Association poll after beating No. 7 Cathedral (14-5) 48-46 on Saturday. The win was the Highlanders’ ninth straight.
Earlier in the week, Floyd (14-2) won 53-36 at Bedford North Lawrence to win the Hoosier Hills Conference championship for the second straight season. Cathedral dropped to No. 7 from last week’s spot at No. 4.

As expected, 10-time defending sectional champion Bedford North Lawrence and upstart Jennings County will meet in Tuesday’s sectional championship game at Jeffersonville’s Johnson Arena.
BNL (22-2) blitzed Floyd Central in a 61-16 victory. The Highlanders, whose season ends with a 9-13 mark, had played well coming into Monday’s sectional semifinal, but the Stars’ pressure never allowed the Highlanders to be in the game.
In the first semifinal, Jennings County (17-6) pulled away from Seymour (11-11) for a 46-26 victory after being tied with the Owls at 19-apiece at halftime.
Bedford beat Jennings County 50-34 on Nov. 30, but Stars’ head coach Jeff Allen is concerned about the Panthers’ size.
“They have size on us. That’s a big thing for us,” he said. “That’s always a concern when we play them. We basically play a bunch of guards. Hopefully we can pressure the basketball and make it hard for them to score.”
BNL enters Tuesday’s title game on a 6-game winning streak, while the Panthers struggled down the stretch, losing three of their final four regular-season games.
“BNL is BNL,” Jennings head coach Kristi Sigler said. “They’re guard-oriented, very fundamentally sound. They make plays. We have to make plays and be able to defend them.”
BNL DOMINATES HIGHLANDERS
Floyd Central came into Monday’s semifinal confident. The Highlanders’ won their final two games, upsetting Jennings County before beating Providence 61-25 in the regular-season finale. BNL, on the other hand, struggled against host Jeffersonville in the first round last Tuesday and trailed through three quarters.
But the Stars were dominant from the start and controlled the contest all night. In the first quarter, Bedford’s Madisyn Bailey — second cousin of former BNL and Indiana University star Damon Bailey — had five steals in the first quarter. The Highlanders, who turned the ball over eight times in the first period, only had one basket — a 3-point play by 6-foot-2 junior Callie Celichowski that cut the Stars’ lead to 6-3 — in the first period.
Bedford scored the next 12 points to lead 18-3 after one quarter and pushed the advantage to 34-4 with 3:15 left in the second period. After leading 43-9 at the break, the Stars increased the lead to as many as 45 points on three occasions.
“We were okay at 8-3, but then we missed some free throws, they got some offensive rebounds, then they hit about four or five 3s,” Floyd Central head coach Randy Gianfagna said. “Then it was pretty ugly after that.”
Keegan Kaiser, who had a very good senior year, led the Highlanders with six points. Celichowski added four points and a team-best five rebounds. Senior Peyton Kochert had a pair of steals in the fourth quarter.
“We played well the last month of the season and tonight was just a buzzsaw,” Gianfagna said. “(Bedford) played like a 10-time sectional champion.”
Sophomore Chloe Spreen led the Stars with 18 points, seven rebounds, five assists, three steals and a blocked shot. Bailey, a sophomore, added 12 points, six steals, three rebounds and three assists. Junior Karsyn Norman finished with 12 points and senior Carlee Kern had 11.
BNL forced 21 Highlanders turnovers — 13 in the first half — and committed just eight, only two of which came before halftime. The Stars had 17 steals.
WOODARD HELPS JENNINGS ADVANCE
Sophomore Juliann Woodard took control in the second half and helped Jennings County pull away from Seymour.
Woodard had seven points and three assists as the Panthers outscored Seymour 21-6 in the third quarter. The 6-foot Woodard controlled the pace and the glass and finished with contest with 11 points and nine rebounds, both game highs.
Seymour led 17-15 late in the second quarter before Woodard scored in the post to tie the game at 17 at the break. It was 19-19 early in the third when Woodard led a game-changing 19-4 run.
“We came out in the second half ready to play,” Sigler said. “We talk virtually all the time about dealing with adversity and I thought our kids responded.”
Sophomore Alivia Elmore and junior Megan Vogel scored eight points apiece and senior Kali Thompson added seven for the Panthers, who beat Seymour 70-42 in the regular season.
The Owls were paced by junior Brooke Trinkle, who had seven points in the defeat. Seymour scored just nine points after halftime.
