THURSDAY’S GIRLS’ GAMES | Highlanders, Pioneers meet in regular-season finale

January 27, 2022

By GREG MENGELT

The wins have been sparse but the 2021-22 Floyd Central Highlanders can be considered one of the state’s most improved teams from the start of the season to Thursday, which is the finish line of the regular season.

Floyd began the season 3-9, but lately the Highlanders have played well even in losses. In fact, the Highlanders lost a road game in overtime to 18-2 Corydon Central on Saturday.

On Tuesday, Floyd Central (8-13) the improvement paid off in a statement win. The Highlanders knocked off Jennings County (16-5) — a team that’s been in an out of the state rankings this season — in their penultimate regular-season game.

Floyd is 3-3 since the calendar turned to 2022. All three losses were against teams ranked in the top 12 in their classes.

“Our team continues to improve, especially since the new year began,” Floyd’s fourth-year coach Randy Gianfagna said. “We are continuing to work on finishing games. We had two tough losses last week but played well.”

The Highlanders close their regular season slate in Thursday’s Hoosier Hills Hoops Game of the Night against rival Providence (6-13) at Larkin Arena. The Pioneers have beaten Floyd five of the last seven years.

“Playing Providence is always special,” Gianfagna said. “Our players and fans know each other very well and it is usually a great atmosphere. Looking forward to the opportunity Thursday.”

“Floyd has always been a rival for us as it is in all sports at Providence. We have been fortunate to win five of the last seven against them,” said Providence 14th-year head coach Brad Burden, who will miss Thursday’s game after testing positive for Covid. “However, this year’s FC team is very good. Long, athletic and of course, very well coached.”

Burden will return for next week’s sectional. Providence will face either 2-time defending champion Eastern (11-11) or Henryville (9-11) in next Friday’s semifinal at the 2A sectional at Crawford County.

“Fortunately we have a great staff and the girls are in good hands with (assistant coaches) Bill Schneider and Sara Copeland,” Burden said.

January 26, 2022

By GREG MENGELT

SAN JOSE, Calif.Jake Heidbreder had arguably his best game as a freshman at Air Force in Tuesday’s 63-53 Mountain West Conference road win over San Jose State at the Provident Credit Union Event Center.

Heidbreder, a former Floyd Central star, had a poor shooting night, going 2 for 8 from the field with all eight attempts coming behind the 3-point arc. He scored eight points, but he also had career highs with eight rebounds and five assists.

Hedibreder made one of his two 3-pointers nearly 5 minutes into the contest to give the Falcons an 11-7 lead. Air Force (10-8, 3-4 MWC) led 31-28 at the half and two Heidbreder free throws pushed the advantage to 35-28 with 17:22 left in the contest.

Two minutes later, Heidbreder’s 3 made it 40-32 with 15:18 remaining. The Falcons led by as many as 11 points on four different occasions.

The balanced Falcons were led by 12 points from senior guard A.J. Walker, 11 from sophomore guard Joseph Octave and 10 off the bench from junior guard Carter Murphy.

Junior guard Omari Moore had a game-high 20 points for San Jose State (7-11, 0-6 MWC), which has now lost seven straight games. Moore also had eight rebounds and four assists.

Air Force hosts Wyoming on Friday with a local tipoff time of 6 p.m. The 15-3 Cowboys suffered their first MWC loss Tuesday, 65-62 at Boise State.

ROMEO TRACKER | Celtics embarrass Sacramento, Romeo scores 3

January 26, 2022

By GREG MENGELT

BOSTONJayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown combined for 66 points and the Boston Celtics crushed visiting Sacramento 128-75 at TD Garden on Tuesday.

Former New Albany and Indiana University star Romeo Langford appears to be back out of the rotation. He played the final 9 minutes Tuesday but didn’t enter the game until the Celtics had a 47-point lead early in the fourth quarter. Langford finished with 3 points on 1 of 3 from the field. He hit his only 3-point attempt and had a rebound and an assist.

Tatum and Brown were a combined 25 of 42 (64.3 percent) as the Celtics went back over .500 at 25-24. Boston has moved up to ninth place in the Eastern Conference after winning four times in its last six games.

The Kings (18-31), who are out of the playoff picture in the West after losing nine of their last 10 games, were paced by 11 points from Buddy Hield. He was the only Sacramento player in double figures. Boston held the Kings to 30.5 percent from the field (29 of 95). Sacremento made just six of its 33 3-point attempts.

The Celtics go to Atlanta (21-25) on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. game on ESPN. The game could have playoff implications. The Hawks are currently one spot behind the Celtics in the standings.
