ATHENS, Ohio — Former Silver Creek star Kooper Jacobi went scoreless, but his Toledo Rockets moved into first place with an 87-69 win at Ohio in a Mid-American Conference showdown Friday evening.
Toledo went on a 24-12 run midway through the first half and controlled the rest of the contest and snapped the Bobcats’ 9-game winning streak.
All five Toledo starters played at least 30 minutes, leaving little time for the reserves. Jacobi’s 8 minutes was second-most off the Rocket bench. The freshman didn’t attempt a field goal but grabbed a pair of rebounds.
Sophomore guard Ryan Rollins led all scorers with 26 points. He also had six rebounds and five assists in the win. Junior guard RayJ Dennis added 18 and Setric Millner Jr. had 17.
Ohio (14-3, 5-1) was led by senior forward Jason Carter’s 19 points and seven rebounds.
Toledo, which is 15-4 overall, 7-1 in the MAC and has won six games in a row, hosts Buffalo (10-6, 4-2) on Tuesday. The Bulls have won four consecutive games. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game can be seen on ESPN Plus.

It hasn’t been often lately that playing Jennings County has been a big game for Hoosier Hills Conference teams.
In fact, for years Floyd Central vs. Jennings County often determined which team would finished last in the HHC.
Not anymore. This year, it appears the Highlanders and Panthers — along with New Albany (6-5) and upstart Seymour (7-4) — appear to be the Hoosier Hills’ and sectional’s top contenders. They’ll meet in Friday’s Hoosier Hills Hoops Game fo the Night.
The Panthers are 10-3 and already have wins over Brownstown Central, North Harrison and Bedford North Lawrence. A win by Floyd would put it at 3-0 in the conference with only Seymour, Bedford North Lawrence (5-5) and Columbus East (2-10) the remaining teams on the Highlanders’ HHC slate.
So, yeah, this is a big one for the Highlanders.
In Friday’s other action, assuming all the games go on as scheduled, North Harrison (8-3) and Lanesville (3-11) meet in a Harrison County rivalry game, No. 11 Eastern (12-2) meets Charlestown (4-9) and Corydon Central (8-6) battles Salem (4-7) in Mid-Southern Conference games, West Washington (4-9) faces Mitchell (6-7) in a Patoka Lakes matchup, sectional rivals Providence (10-3) and Henryville (4-7) play, as do former MSC rivals Scottsburg (8-5) and Clarksville (4-8). Also, New Washington’s game with Austin was canceled, so the 2-10 Mustangs picked up Oldenburg Academy (3-7) as a late add to their schedule.
(NOTE: Friday’s originally-scheduled Game of the Night — Silver Creek vs. New Albany — was postponed Thursday. The game has been rescheduled for Feb. 12.)

Over the years, the Jeffersonville-New Albany game has determined the Hoosier Hills Conference championship many times. The Bulldogs and Red Devils have then gone on to meet each other in big postseason games a couple weeks later.
This doesn’t appear to be one of those years. New Albany is 5-15 and has lost seven in a row. Jeff has lost four straight and has struggled just to have enough players to field a team. The Devils have only played one in the new year.
“We have grown tremendously as a team this season. However, with quarantines eliminating all game but one since Dec. 14, it’s been hard to test ourselves in game situations,” Jeffersonville coach Missy Voyles said.
Of course, records, losing streak and missed games in the past don’t matter when it comes to rivalry games. No what the situation, Jeff wants to beat New Albany and New Albany wants to beat Jeff just as badly in the Hoosier Hills Hoops Game of the Night.
“Of course, this is a big rivalry for us, so the team is really looking forward to it,” Voyles said. “New Albany has two great veteran guards in (Taylor) Treat and (Maleea) Roland. It should be a fun game to watch.”
Voyles says she’s been looking for leadership from her team this season. She’s hoping she’s found it in junior Cadence Singleton, who had 11 points and 15 rebounds in the loss to Salem.
“Salem was a big step forward for Cadence,” Voyles said. “It’s the first time I’ve really seen her want to lead. That could be huge going into a game at New Albany.”

Two of the North Harrison Sectional’s top four teams meet Thursday in the
Hoosier Hills Hoops Game of the Night when Charlestown goes to Salem.
The Pirates and Lions — along with Corydon Central — are expected to be sectional contenders, should defending state champion and fourth-ranked Silver Creek stumble.
With the Dragons already in possession of the Mid-Southern Conference title, Thursday’s game is a late-season tuneup and a chance for both teams to gain some momentum heading into the sectional in two weeks.
Charlestown is 14-5 and has won four straight games, three of those on the road, the other an easy home win against 4A New Albany. The Pirates won at Madison on Friday and at Brownstown Central in a 16-hour period and passed both tests a couple weekends ago.
“The Mid-Southern Conference is tough,” Charlestown coach Scott Matthews said. “We’ve faced adversity and done pretty well with it.”
Aside from losses in a tournament at Scottsburg, the Pirates’ only losses have been to Silver Creek and Corydon Central, the top two teams in the MSC>
“Charlestown is one of the best teams in the conference and in the sectional,” Salem coach Jerry Hickey said. “They are having a great year, as everyone expected them to. They have been a little overshadowed by the success of Silver Creek and Corydon, but they are an extremely talented team.
Salem (10-7) has dominated the MSC the last half-decade but has had an up-and-down season (thanks in large part to one of Southern Indiana’s toughest schedules). The Lions still have two players who contributed heavily to their 2020 state finals team and four players with a ton of varsity experience. There’s no doubt the Lions will be one of the teams no one wants to see when the sectional fields are announced Sunday.
“Those girls have experienced some stuff,” Matthews said of players like seniors Abigail Ratts, Natalie Noel and Kayla Klinglesmith. “They’re going to have six veterans out there who’ve experienced a lot of success.”
Salem has a 5-game winning streak in its series against the Pirates.
“The past few years we have had successful years and our game with them has always come down to the last few possessions,” Hickey said. “They are well coached and balanced with talented post players surrounded by guards who can shoot the 3 and handle the ball. Should be a great game.”
