SATURDAY’S BOYS’ GAMES | Inconsistent Bulldogs face defending state champion Carmel

December 18, 2021

By GREG MENGELT

It’s been an odd season for New Albany.

Though just five games in, the Bulldogs have been obviously inconsistent. They’re 2-3 and have an unexpectedly hard-fought win over Clarksville and an equally unexpected overtime loss against Zionsville, the state’s top ranked team.

Their last game — eight days ago — was a 31-point loss to rival Floyd Central. Close games against teams they should beat easily, a close loss to the state’s top team, a tough loss on the road against a really good Bloomington South team and a game in which the Bulldogs scored just 26 points. What do we make of this New Albany team so far?

“We are dealing with some injuries and hope to get everyone to 100 percent in early January,” New Albany coach Jim Shannon said.

Tucker Biven has been healthy and leading the way for the Bulldogs. He had a team-high 7 points against Floyd. Shannon says Biven will need help from Jayden Thompson and Josten Carter, who combined for 8 points in last Friday’s loss against Carmel.

The defending state champions come into Saturday’s contest ranked fourth and 5-2 on the season. The Greyhounds have suffered losses to top-ranked Zionsville (45-42 to open the season) and No. 3 Homestead (6-1) 48-47 on Dec. 4.

Carmel is led by senior Pete Sudor, who is on the radar of programs like Purdue, Indiana, Butler and Xavier. Junior wing Sam Orme led the Greyhounds with 20 points and 9 rebounds in Friday’s 45-41 win over North Central.

“Carmel presents a tough matchup with their size and athleticism,” Shannon said. ”Suder is an Indiana All-Star but obviously not their only weapon.”

SATURDAY’S GIRLS’ GAMES | New Wash faces big test in No. 3 Eagles

December 18, 2021

By GREG MENGELT

New Washington coach Kirsti Holloway knows what her team is up against in Saturday’s Hoosier Hills Hoops Game of the Day.

Holloway’s Mustangs take on Class A No. 3 Lanesville, who comes into Saturday’s Southern Athletic Conference showdown 12-1, on an 8-game winning streak and, of course, as the 3-time defending sectional champions.

It wouldn’t be a surprise, at all, if Lanesville is hoisting the state championship trophy at the end of the season.

So Holloway says all New Wash can do is take care of itself.

“I try to encourage my players to control the controllable when it comes to preparation, attitude and effort, regardless of who the opponent is we are facing,” she siad. “I believe that if we overlook anyone, we can be beaten by anyone whether it be Lanesville or someone else and that’s why we play the game. It is my desire every time I interact with my team to give them the skills, tools and support necessary to be playing at their very best when their very best is required.”

New Wash has had an up-and-down season to reach 5-7. The Mustangs lost their SAC opener at Borden 56-52 on Nov. 30. A win today would put New Wash back in the conference race.

“The main goal we have in mind with the schedule lay out is for our team to be prepared physically and mentally when February rolls around,” Holloway said. “I believe we do a good job of mixing various class level competitive teams from the MSC and other Southern Indiana conferences. My hope is that we have the right mental approach going into every contest, regardless of who it is and dictate our own level of play with consistency and a competitive mindset.

Sophomore Kaidin James leads New Wash at 15 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals per game. Grace Ellison comes in at 11 points a game and Macy Fields leads the team at 5 assists per game. Holloway says senior Emma DeCamp has been the stabilizing player for the Mustangs.

“She does the gritty work — boxing out, taking charges, setting solid screens to open her teammates — that doesn’t show up on most stat sheets,” Holloway said. “I am thankful I can count on her consistency every game.”

ROMEO TRACKER | Langford starts in Celtics loss to Warriors

December 18, 2021

By GREG MENGELT

Romeo Langford

BOSTON — With five players in COVID-19 protocols, former New Albany star Romeo Langford got the start for Boston on Friday when the Celtics hosted the Golden State Warriors.

Langford scored 2 points and grabbed 2 rebounds in 8 minutes and the Celtics suffered a 111-107 setback at TD Garden. The Warriors are now 24-5 and passed Phoenix for the league’s best record with Friday’s win.

Steph Curry, who broke Ray Allen’s career 3-pointers made mark, scored 30 points and helped Golden State outscore Boston 68-54 in the first half. The Celtics got within a 82-81 at the end of the third and took the lead on a long Jayson Tatum jumper on Boston’s first possession of the second half.

The Celtics trailed 97-95 with 5:56 left, but Curry capped an 8-0 run with a 3 with 4:25 remaining. Jaylen Brown’s basket with 50 seconds left got Boston within 107-104 with 50.9 remaining, but Damion Lee put the game away with two free throws with 2.8 to go.

Boston outscored the Warriors 27-14 in the third quarter.

“Love the fight and effort overall. Shorthanded or not, we’ve got capable guys out there,” Boston first-year coach Ime Udoka said.

Curry, who is averaging 26.9 points per game — fourth in the league — made 5 more 3-pointers for 2.982 in his storied career. Andrew Wiggins added 27 in Golden State’s 13th victory in its last 16 games.

The Celtics (14-15) got 27 points from Tatum, 20 from Brown and 19 from Marcus Smart in the loss. Jason Richardson scored 15 off the Celtics bench.

There were 87 3-pointers attempted in the game.

The Celtics host the New York Knicks at 7 p.m. Saturday. The Knicks are 13-16 after snapping a 4-game losing streak Thursday with a 116-103 win at Houston. The game will air on NBA TV.
