NEW ALBANY, Ind. — An outdoor basketball court bearing the name of Indiana University freshmen-to-be Romeo Langford debuted on Saturday in conjunction with the grand opening of Kevin Hammersmith Memorial Park.
Following a ceremony to officially open the new park, Romeo Langford Basketball Court played host to three scrimmage games: two elementary school contests featuring Floyd County Elementary Basketball League teams and an alumni game between former Floyd Central and New Albany players.
Langford and his family were in attendance for all three games. The plan is for Langford to return to Bloomington on Sunday, he said.
New Albany edges Floyd Central in alumni game
Dustin Cochran netted a 10-foot floater with 0:02 seconds remaining to lift the New Albany alumni squad over Floyd Central in Saturday’s final game.
Cochran, a 2014 graduate, finished with five points and was named MVP.
Michael Maxwell (2016) led the New Albany alumni with 10 points. Javen Reeves (2014) chipped in eight and Dre McBirth (2014) seven.
Trevor Apple (2017) paced the Floyd Central alumni with nine points, and Nick Bomersbach (2012) had eight.
The game was open to graduates of both programs from the classes of 2010-2017.
Floyds Knobs girls, Grant Line boys win elementary scrimmages
The day started with two elementary scrimmages, both rematches from the 2017-18 Floyd County Elementary Basketball League finals in February.
Floyds Knobs blanked Greenville 6-0 in the girls’ scrimmage, with Gabby Ferrazzi scoring four points to lead the Cougars.
In the boys’ scrimmage, Grant Line defeated Mount Tabor, the elementary school Langford attended, 24-12. Braden Brewer tallied eight points and Cruz Anderson five in the Yellowjackets’ victory. The Tigers were led in defeat by Andrew Crowdus’ six points.
Pat Graham Basketball Court coming in 2019
Floyd County Parks and Recreation will improve a court in the spring of 2019 at a to-be-determined county park in honor of Floyd Central legend and 1989 Indiana Mr. Basketball
Pat Graham.
The project will coincide with the 30th anniversary of Graham being named Mr. Basketball.
